Our borrowing library is a warm an inviting space where learners are introduced to the magic of books. Weekly library class begins with a read aloud that aims to connect to themes that have emerged in the classroom or to a project being created in art class. Learners then browse and explore the library’s wide selection of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and wordless books. With the library’s catalogue ranging from classic to contemporary children’s literature there is truly a book for every reader. Learning how to care for and check out library books gives students a sense of agency, an opportunity to practice community care, and of a way to share the books they love with the people they love at home.
Our studio is a bustling space of creation and discovery. On open studio days the space is setup with different stations for free-exploration of materials and techniques like building, cutting, sewing, drawing, and sculpting. On project days learners focus on either an individual or collaborative project that goes deeper into a material or technique. The studio’s approach aspires to provide a strong base for students that encourages their unique expressions and curiosities to flow.
In our indoor gymnasium, children are given ample space to build and practice their motor skills, stimulate brain development and decision making, all while learning the importance of being a part of a team. The children are taught fun new games and get to explore the different elements of physical education in a fully play-based manner.
Within our classes, we teach many parts of music to the children such as phrase, pitch, and texture. We incorporate new components to connect what we hear to what we feel and how we move. We encourage discovery through exploratory reactions including moving phrases in space, drawing them on the board, looking at the musical score, and improvised new songs on the xylophone.
Within our dance classes, the children learn the importance of taking care of themselves while beginning new movement patterns and routines. Our improvisation allows them to find and enjoy their creative spirit while enhancing their strength, flexibility, and memory. The children perform at the Winter Recital for their parents and friends.
